Title

Environmental Pollution and the Brain: What have we Learnt from the Lab and the Field

Abstract

My lab has been looking at environmental toxicants and how they affect the brain. In the last 2 decades, we have concentrated on vanadium, a transition metal that is a contaminant of the crude oil of many countries, and an alloy used in the steel industry. The continuous global dependence on oil and thus subsequent increased exploration, crude oil burning, gas flaring, and the increased demand for steel production make vanadium toxicity a pertinent issue. I shall be presenting on work done on the experimental neurotoxicity of vanadium and the neuro-therapeutics that we have explored. Also, using the African Giant Rat as models in our lab in the last 15 years, we have examined real-life changes in the brain in polluted areas in Nigeria. In addition, however, I shall also be sharing briefly on the good of vanadium in the nervous system and infectious viruses that have been seen in the brains of wild rodents in the course of my research.
